Useful Ways to Spend Leisure Time
Leisure time is set aside for relaxation. There can be useful and yet exciting ways to spend our leisure time. Some suggestions include reading, taking part in sports and doing charity work.
Reading is one of the best ways to spend our free time. Besides spending our time in a relaxing manner, reading also has many benefits. It helps to improve our language, grammar and vocabulary skills. Moreover, it improves our general knowledge and gives us a better insight into life. We can learn a lot about other countries, their cultures and people without travelling to these places.
Engaging in physical exercises and sports is another fantastic way of spending our leisure time. Exercise clears the mind and makes the body healthy. It is also a good way to relieve stress. Examples of sports activities we take up are swimming, jogging and playing games.
Perhaps one of the most rewarding ways to spend leisure time is doing charity work at special homes for the disabled, the blind and the aged. This is by signing up as a volunteer. We gain benefits that are two-fold. By making others happy, we are making ourselves happy too.
With so many ways to spend one's leisure time at our disposal, one wonders why youths today spend their free time on dangerous pursuits like taking drugs, smoking and dangerous sports like racing. They are detrimental to one's life, health and incur high expenses.
Career in Journalism
To many young people, journalism is not their choice of a career. Many prefer to go for jobs related to computers or marketing. And others prefer to go for a job that promises elements of glamour and excitement.
Journalism is actually an interesting and challenging career. It suits those with strong language skills and a passion for writing. Many journalists find great satisfaction in their work.
Here are some guidelines to help those who are thinking of becoming a successful journalist. Firstly, there must be a strong commitment to the job. When joining a company, be it a newspaper or a magazine, trainees during internship must be willing to take time to observe and learn from experienced journalists.
The period of internship can be a trying one. It is during such time, interns are given the opportunity to demonstrate their talents and skills. To their frustration, they can be required to do trivial tasks such as photocopying, faxing and answering phones and when actually given writing jobs, it entails doing research at home after office hours or writing stories over the weekends.
Big or proper writing jobs are not often available at the moment they want them. Many successful journalists do freelancing until the right opportunity comes along.
As journalists, do not limit yourself to newspaper journalism. You can try out for a job in broadcasting. Most journalists hop between print, magazine and broadcasting many times in their career. Journalists have been known to host their own shows on television while continuously publishing features in the press.
E-mail Etiquette
Electronic mail is a means of communication with people. It is also the cheapest and one of the fastest ways of communication However, just as in other forms of communication, some basic etiquette must be followed.
For instance, if you ask for something in your e-mail, you should say 'please'. Similarly, if someone does something for you, do reply and say 'thank you'. Moreover, include enough information in your mail if you ask a question or make a query to which you expect an answer.
After sending an e-mail, do not expect an immediate answer. Very often, we have to wait for a while before receiving a reply. Just because you do not get an answer from someone in ten minutes, it does not mean that the person is ignoring you. So there is no cause for offence. Never send another e-mail to tell the person off.
When composing an e-mail message, make sure you read it over again before sending it. Spending time on making your e-mail clearer is time well spent and worth your effort. If the sentences are unclear or ambiguous, you have to take some time to rephrase them to make them comprehensible. Lastly, always use a signature for your mail. The signature identifies who you are. You do not want the receiver to wonder who has sent the mail.
By observing these simple rules, your e-mail is likely to be well received. Th e outcome is that you will receive in return courteous and satisfactory e-mails too.
Multimedia Resources as Learning Tools
Videos, television and computers are effective electronic teaching tools especially in today's context. Our Minis of Education has introduced the use of Computer Assisted Learning programmes in many schools.
The use of videos and television certainly improves the learning process among students. Generally, young children and teenagers learn better and faster from the small screen than from the printed word. They absorb more from the screen. It does not matter what educational programme they are reading or watching.
Through the Internet and the multiple formats communicated over the web, students have access to new and exciting ways of learning. The computer allows the incorporation of animation, moving pictures and sound into lessons. These multimedia resources present materials which encourage the learner's interaction with the subject matter. Pictures and animations help bring to life principles and content of the subjects they are learning. By so doing, students can take a more active role in their learning.
One of the advantages of using multimedia resources is they convey information quickly and effectively. In this way, they make students more interested in learning. Moreover, they can learn at their own pace and convenience. All they need is a computer or television and some CD-ROMs.
The use ofmultimedia resources in education is widespread today. Its greatest benefit is that a wide range of resources is at the learners' disposal. Many schools use a combination ofclass lessons, texts and multimedia resources during lessons.

The Benefits of Cereal
A cereal is a grass such as oats, barley and maize. It is good for us as it is a rich source of nutrients.
Oats are very nutritious. In fact, they can be a real boon to people trying to get a good diet on a low budget. It is available as whole grains with the husks removed. This is called oat groats which need cooking for 45 minutes. All forms of oats can be used to make porridge. They can be combined with groundnuts to make a roast or can even be added to a stew. Oatmeal is low in gluten and is mixed with wheat flour to add flavour and texture to bread, muffins and pancakes.
Barley can be a very important source of direct human food. It contains gluten, so barley flour can be made into bread. What we have in the market is whole barley or polished pearl barley. However, it is also possible to buy barley flakes or kernels.
The whole barley is more nutritious, providing protein, carbohydrates, fibre, folic acid, iron and calcium. It can be cooked on its own as a pleasant alternative to rice, pasta or potatoes, or added to stews.
Maize is the principal food plant of many countries. Rich in protein, it is used for human food, animal feed and as a source of raw materials for industry.
Fresh maize is often available as sweet corn and corn on the cob. We often see maize as cornflakes or popcorn. Cornmeal can be added to soups, pancakes and muffins. A lot of snack food is made from maize meal such as tortilla chips.
Fast-food Restaurants
Although fast-food restaurants are often seen as a mark of modern technological culture, they are probably as old as cities themselves with the style varying from culture to culture. For instance, Ancient Roman cities had bread-and-olive stands. East Asian cultures feature noodle shops.
The modern history of fast food is connected with the earliest fast-food outlets selling hamburgers as their primary product. A fast-food restaurant is characterised both by the food which is supplied quickly after ordering, and by minimal service. The food is often cooked in bulk in advance and kept hot or reheated to order.
Many fast-food restaurants are part of restaurant chains or franchise operations, which ship standardised foodstuffs to each restaurant from central locations. There are also simpler fast-food outlets such as stands or kiosks. They may or may not provide shelter or seats for customers.
Fast-food outlets are take-away or take-out providers. Usually, they are with a drive-through service to allow customers to order and pick up food from their cars. However, most also have a seating area in which customers can eat the food on the premises.
Finger food comprises most fast food and so can be eaten without cutlery. Examples of fast food include fish and chips, sandwiches, pitas, hamburgers, fried chicken, french fries, chicken nuggets, tacos, pizzas or ice cream although many fast-food restaurants offer 'slower' food like mashed potatoes or salads.
